We have news from Linda that they are all right <Linda's blog>, and in fact although the tsunami is expected to reach the North Island of New Zealand (i.e., should have reached there by now), several factors will tend to protect our friends from direct exposure to harm:
• They really are quite a distance from the earthquake's epicenter.
• The opening of the bay is quite narrow, and faces away from the epicenter.
• The marina where they are refitting Lark is over a mile upriver and past a sharp bend from the bay itself.
• Lark is out of the water, on stands in the boatyard.
We assume that they are safe.
Paste this into Google Earth to see their boatyard, then zoom out to see their situation:
35°44'23.09" S 174°20'19.11" E
Coverage of this disaster:
• "Japan tragedy related to New Zealand's calamity" (The Australian)
• "'Minor land threat' expected as tsunami wave reaches New Zealand" (The New Zealand Herald)
• "2011 Sendai earthquake and tsunami" (Wikipedia)
I don't expect to update this list; I just thought these were interesting.
